A cat left alone in a room with a bookshelf, a curtain rail, and a kitchen counter will, with near certainty, treat all three as options worth exploring, and usually within the first few minutes. Climbing is not a quirk that some cats happen to develop — it is close to the default state of the species, present from kittenhood, and backed by an entire body built specifically to make height, balance, and vertical movement come naturally.
Understanding why cats climb so readily, and so well, means looking past the behaviour itself to the anatomy, instinct, and evolutionary history underneath it — all of which point toward the same conclusion: climbing is not an eccentric hobby for a cat, it is closer to a core part of the design.
The Anatomy Built for Climbing
A cat's body includes several specific features that, combined, make climbing an unusually natural and low-effort activity compared to almost any other domestic animal.
Retractable claws provide grip on demand. Unlike a dog's fixed claws, a cat's claws retract when not in use and extend sharply when needed, giving a cat a reliable, on-demand grip on bark, fabric, and rough surfaces without wearing the claws down through constant ground contact.
A flexible spine allows for extreme body positioning. A cat's spine contains significantly more vertebrae than a human's, along with more flexible connections between them, allowing for the kind of twisting, arching, and mid-air correction that climbing and jumping both depend on.
Powerful hind legs generate significant jumping power. A cat's back legs are proportionally strong relative to body weight, allowing a standing jump of several times its own body length — a critical tool for reaching an elevated branch, shelf, or ledge without needing a running start.
A highly mobile shoulder structure supports reaching and pulling. Unlike many mammals, a cat's shoulder blades are not rigidly attached to the collarbone, giving the front legs an unusually wide range of motion useful for reaching, pulling the body upward, and squeezing through narrow gaps while climbing.
An excellent sense of balance, centred in the inner ear and supported by the tail. A cat's vestibular system, combined with a long, flexible tail used for counterbalance, allows for the kind of precise balance needed to walk along a narrow branch, fence, or shelf edge with minimal hesitation.

Height also supported hunting. Many of a cat's ancestral prey species, including birds and small climbing mammals, were themselves found at height, meaning a cat capable of climbing had access to food sources that a purely ground-based hunter would miss.
Elevated vantage points support surveillance and territory awareness. A cat positioned above its surroundings can observe a wider area, track movement below, and assess potential threats or opportunities more effectively than one confined to ground level — a genuine advantage that persists as a strong preference in domestic cats today.
Climbing provides a sense of security that ground level does not always offer. Many cats, particularly in a busy or unpredictable household, show a preference for resting at height specifically because it removes the uncertainty of what might approach from the side, keeping potential threats within a single field of view below.
Why Kittens Start Climbing So Early
Climbing ability and interest typically show up remarkably early in a kitten's development, well before most other coordinated physical behaviours are fully established.

- Physical exercise that is difficult to replicate through ground-level play alone, engaging muscle groups and coordination that flat play surfaces do not challenge in the same way
- A genuine outlet for the height-seeking, security-related instinct that indoor cats retain regardless of whether any actual threat exists in the home
- Territorial confidence, since access to multiple elevated points allows a cat to survey its full indoor environment, often reducing stress in multi-cat households where floor-level territory can feel contested
- Mental stimulation through the physical challenge of route-finding, balance, and problem-solving involved in reaching a specific elevated spot
Giving a Cat Appropriate Places to Climb
Since the instinct is not optional, the more useful question for most owners is how to provide climbing opportunities that satisfy it without sacrificing the bookshelf or the curtains in the process.
- Provide a cat tree or vertical shelving with multiple levels, positioned to give a view of a window or a well-used room rather than a low-traffic corner
- Install wall-mounted shelves or steps as a lower-cost, space-efficient alternative to a freestanding tree, particularly useful in smaller homes
- Offer a variety of textures and heights rather than a single tall option, since different resting spots serve different purposes throughout the day
- Position at least one climbing option near a window, combining the height instinct with the strong feline interest in outdoor observation
- Redirect climbing away from off-limits furniture consistently, providing an appropriate alternative nearby rather than only removing access to the undesired spot
- Ensure any climbing furniture is genuinely stable, since a wobbly or poorly anchored cat tree can create a negative association that discourages a cat from using it at all
