The Cat Headbutt: What Does It Mean, and Why Do Cats Do It?

Headbutt looks like a funny term. Parts of the word may be familiar to you, but if you are a new cat parent, a cat headbutt is something you might love to know more about.

What exactly is a Cat headbutt?

Just like you may already know when your cat does headbutts she will bump her head against a wall, furniture, or you and then slide down to rub her cheeks on it. This cute move is also known as Cat Bunting technically.

Why do cats headbutt?

Cats headbutt to mark and leave their scent on things or people as a sign of friendliness and trust. It means that she has added it to her safe zone. Do not mistake it for marking their territory. Cats lick mostly to show that.

Whereas headbutting is a way of expressing the fact that they feel safe about that thing or person. So, if your cat is headbutting you, she is feeling safe with you. Congrats, she is showing her bond and affection shared with you.

In fact, headbutting is done by the whole cat family, like the lion. They headbutt against each other when they feel safe around one another. When she does it with other cats, it is like the toast we share with our friends at a party. She headbutts another feline friend of hers to make sure that they are now a team.

It may sound strange while talking about scent when a cat only scrubs her face and cheeks on something. But here is a quick cat fact for you.

Quiet cat fact

Well, science says that cats have scent glands all over their body. When they touch or rub themselves on anything, this scent persists on the object or person. But this cannot be identified by humans whereas cats know that there is another cat’s scent there.

Therefore, this secret scent leaves traces of her feeling as a safe-zoned person or object in her opinion.

My cat is not headbutting…. me!
By now if you have felt insecure that your cat is not headbutting with you, chill, you are not alone. Not all cat parents are blessed to hit a headbutt with their cats. Some cats do not headbutt at all or seldom do that.

Headbutting or not, she will like you if she likes you. So, give a cool cat cheers and stay pretty catty… 😊
